'Believe to Achieve'

Week 1

Roman Day Trip

On Tuesday the year 3s went on a very exciting trip to Wollaton Hall for a Roman themed learning day. For our first activity we had to be archaeologists. We looked at a range of artefacts and thought about what this taught us about the Romans. We found a range of animal bones, Roman coins, lamps, pottery, gold jewellery and goblets.

Then we tried on a Roman helmet (galea) and were even visited by a Roman soldier!
Our second activity involved learning about life in Roman Britain. We wrote an invitation to a friend inviting them to a Roman banquet. We used the Latin alphabet to do this and also studied male and female Roman names to notice language patterns. Also, we learnt about the invention of Roman baths as well as the types of food which was consumed during the Roman age. Finally, we took part in a Roman banquet. Some children were chosen to wear tunics and togas and we had our own banquet!

Maths

This week, we have started our new maths topic: time. The children have consolidated their knowledge from year 2 by telling the time to 0, clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past the hour. Towards the end of the week they also played a board game and began to tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes. Time is a really tricky concept to learn so the more practise that children get at this at home, the easier they will find this in the long term.
