Nigeria Afternoon 27.06.23
Tuesday 27th June 2023
At Southglade we celebrated all things Nigeria which was kick started by a lovely Nigerian lunch.
All classes learned a little about Nigeria including its location, national dish, most popular city and the languages spoken in Nigeria.
Year 1 and Year 3 learned about and recreated their own patterns in an Akwete style. They learned about Akwete cloth and how this was made in Nigeria. They used inspiration to create their own and then added beautiful colours.
Year 2 and Year 5 learned about Nigeria's national flower, the Yellow Trumpet. They then followed a step by step video to draw their own Yellow trumpet flowers. Year 2 chose to use pencil crayons to add colour, whereas Year 5 chose to add colour with water colour paints. All of the art looked fantastic!
Year 4 and Year 6 learned about the musical genre of Afrobeats which is very popular in Nigeria and a lot of Afrobeats artists originate from Nigeria. The children listened to some popular songs from Afrobeats artists and then recreated their own beats on Purple Mash in the style of Afrobeats.
In the Base our some of our pupils expressed themselves through music and dance originating from Nigeria. They even had their own drums to join in with the beat and create their own.
