Adaptation

To identify how animals and plants are adapted to suit their environment in different ways and that adaptation may lead to evolution

Charles Darwin introduced the Theory of Evolution. He realised that all the living things in a particular species are slightly different, just like we are all unique.

Darwin came up with the theory of natural selection or survival of the fittest. Life is often very hard for plants and animals and some will die before they get the chance to reproduce. Therefore, offspring who inherit the best characteristics for survival are more likely to reproduce and pass their characteristics on to their offspring.

Darwin did a lot of research on the Galapagos Islands - watch the video below that explains about finches on the Galapagos Islands and how they had to evolve.

Read the information below about the finches on the Galapagos Islands and answer the questions. Alternatively, you can just complete the research task (part 5).

The birds below have all evolved beaks to help them survive in different habitats and take advantage of the different foods available in those habitats.

Research each of these birds, identify the habitats in which they are found and identify what they eat. Explain how their beaks have evolved into the perfect tool to help them with their diets.
