  • EAL afternoon

Fri 24 Sep 2021 Mr Pegram

    Spanish Afternoon

On Wednesday 22nd of September children across the school enjoyed a fantastic afternoon of fun celebrating all things Spanish. Children in KS2 focused on Gaudi and made amazing mosaics inspired by Gaudi whilst children in ks1 looked at Picasso and a type of art called Cubism. In EYFS children found out all about the Spanish flag and the colours it contains within it.

There was also a Spanish themed menu with children and vegetable paella for the children to enjoy- it was very tasty.

Some year groups also learnt how to flamenco dance- year 2 did an incredible job with this.

Thank-you to Miss Fryer who is our EAL lead across school for organising such a fun afternoon for all of our children.

  • Year 2 Awe and Wonder Day

Wed 22 Sep 2021 Mrs Yates

On Tuesday 21st September, Year 2 had a fantastic Awe and Wonder day based on their topic of the Great Fire of London! They spent the day doing art work replicating the flames and silhouettes in a range of artwork, thinking about fireworks including colours and shapes, learning about fire safety including stop, drop and roll, pretending to be firemen to see how to pass water down a line to put out the fire, working out how long or how they would be able to do this and finally thinking about how the fire would spread using toilet rolls and marbles. Take a look at the class page to find out more.

    Playhouse Link

We are pleased to announce that we are one of 5 schools in the East Midlands who have been chosen (following a very competitive interview process) to work closely with the Nottingham Playhouse to help develop the drama and oracy skills of pupils at our school. Mrs Dowse and Mrs Rowlett will be leading on this project which will have a hugely positive impact on our pupils during this academic year and those following. Congratulations to all the staff who were involved in the application to provide our children with this great opportunity.

  • Music Mark Award

Tue 21 Sep 2021 Mr Pegram

    Exciting News

Southglade Primary and Nursery school have been nominated by Nottingham Music Hub to become a Music Mark School. This is in recognition of our commitment to a broad and balanced curriculum with music at its heart.

    Musical Instruments

This week children in Y4-Y6 will start their weekly musical instrument lessons. This will be the first time for 18 months that these have taken place due to covid-19. Even more excitingly, all children will have their own instruments that they will play; these will be taken home on a Friday after school and returned the following Friday. We really hope to find some budding musical superstars who become expert trumpet and trombone players.

  • Well Being Wednesday - How can I stay safe?

Wed 15 Sep 2021 Mrs Yates

On Wednesday 15th September we completed a whole school wellbeing Wednesday afternoon focusing on answering the question 'How can I stay safe?'

As a school we worked through a range of different skills throughout each year group which developed our knowledge and understanding of how to stay safe. We thought about the best ways to help each other, look after ourselves at school, outside and online. We answered this question through a range of activities including written and art based creative activities. We also used our oracy skills to discuss different scenarios and identify ways or people who keep us safe.

  • Wow Basketball Day

Thu 09 Sep 2021 Mr Pegram

Children across the school enjoyed a brilliant experience meeting Paul Sturgess who played basketball for the Harlem Globetrotters. He was in the Guinness World Records for being the tallest professional basketball player there has ever been. He has also appeared in films such as Avatar 2 and in TV shows such as Doctor Who.

The children listened to him talk about his life and they all got to take part in PE activities with him.

The weather was glorious throughout and the children's behaviour was noted for being impeccable.

Below is a picture of Mrs Hyland with Paul Sturgess who is 7ft 7.26 inches tall.

  • First Day Back

Thu 02 Sep 2021 Mr Pegram

We were all so impressed with the sensible attitude that children displayed today on their first day back at school. The children enjoyed  being able to play anywhere on the playground with their friends at break and lunchtime and also loved settling into their new classes. We hope they continue with this great start tomorrow. Please note gates and classroom doors open for all pupils at 8.30am. We want all children to be in their classes and ready to learn by 8.45am at the latest. We have a lot of work to complete this year and a lot of learning to catch up on after 2 years of disruption.

Thank-you for your support with this matter.

  • RSE Day 24.6.21

Sun 27 Jun 2021 Mrs Morton

This year's theme for RSE day was 'faces.' See the description below to learn how each year group celebrated the day.

EYFSLooked at the theme ‘we are all look different but we are all friends’ - the children read an ebook about differences and compared hair type, skin colour, eyes etc. The children drew pictures of their friends face.

Year 1: The children explored the movement of cubism from Pablo Picasso. The children thought about colours that represented them and they created their own Picasso faces. The children labelled their face using adjectives and noun phrases.

Year 2: The children learnt about their family tree. They thought about our learning value 'Tolerance' and used some of their oracy skills to talk about what makes their family unique. Some of them even shared their family photos with the class. They used oil pastels and sketching skills to draw a family portrait of their family.

Year 3: The children discussed people who were important in their lives and shared what they look like. They drew people who were important to them with chalk outside and created pictures focused on diverse faces.

Year 4: The children had an RSE lesson about personal space and healthy/ unhealthy boundaries

Year 5: In year 5, the children learnt about the physical and emotional changes that take place during puberty.

Year 6: The children participated in the livestream event ‘See me for who I am’ with Discovery Education Health and Relationships. The key message of the session was that beauty was from within and that what is on the inside is more important than what we see on the outside. The children reflected on what they liked about themselves, what they were good at, what they would like to improve and what they were proud of.

  • Year 6 DARE programme

Mon 19 Apr 2021 Mr Pegram

    Year 6 DARE information

I am writing to let you know about the DARE 25 Programme that we are planning to run during the next term and to outline the content of the course.

The course will be taught by a DARE Officer who is employed by Lifeskills Education Charity; please be assured that as a visitor into school the DARE Officer will be following school guidelines regarding the current Covid 19 pandemic.

The DARE 25 Programme is a 10-week course with a graduation at the end which teaches children how to make the safe and healthy decisions which they will need as they develop into adulthood and beyond.

The class will be involved in discussion and activities and will watch video clips during which they will meet the DARE Crew. The DARE crew often get themselves into risky situations and the class will help them to make informed decisions and to keep safe and healthy.

During the course the children will use a workbook, which they can bring home and share with you. This will include them discussing responsibility, pressure and peer pressure, confident communication, bullying and cyberbullying, risks and consequences, stress and support networks.

We will also be discussing helpful and harmful drugs, and alcohol and the effects that these have on the body. The programme includes discussion on knife safety and will also explore the differences between various groups in society.
This year, the DARE programme has been running in the East Midlands for 25 years, with almost 400,000 graduates and has been proven to make a difference in young people’s lives.
For more information please visit www.lifeskills-education.co.uk where you will also find a link to the most recent research about the course.

    Kindest of regards

    Mr Kevin Pegram
