Outdoor Learning

Vision Statement

At Southglade Primary and Nursery school we believe that outdoor learning should be woven into the curriculum where possible. Our Outdoor Learning Policy aims to encourage children’s love of learning. We believe that all children have the right to experience the unique and special nature of being outdoors, having a positive impact on children of all ages and abilities. We further believe that it is important to enable children to use the outside environment as a context for learning.

Outdoor Learning in EYFS
At our school, outdoor learning is an important part of every day in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Whatever the weather, our children enjoy spending time outside, exploring the world around them and engaging in a wide range of hands-on activities. From imaginative play and nature exploration to physical challenges and creative projects, our outdoor environment provides endless opportunities for curiosity, discovery, and fun. Learning outdoors supports children’s physical health, social skills, confidence, and well-being, while also deepening their understanding of the world. We believe that fresh air, movement, and active learning are essential for every child’s growth, development, and love of learning.

Outdoor Learning in Key Stage 1
In Key Stage 1, we make the most of our outdoor environment to bring learning to life across the curriculum. Outdoor learning is an integral part of our teaching, providing children with meaningful, hands-on experiences that enhance their understanding and enjoyment of each subject. In science, for example, pupils explore topics such as plants, minibeasts, and animals through real-life investigation and discovery in our school grounds. By observing nature closely, asking questions, and making connections to their classroom learning, children develop curiosity, confidence, and a deeper appreciation of the world around them. Taking learning outside not only supports academic progress but also promotes physical well-being, teamwork, and a lifelong love of learning.

Outdoor Learning in Key Stage 2
In Key Stage 2, we continue to make outdoor learning a valuable part of our curriculum, using our school grounds and local environment to inspire and extend classroom learning. Across subjects such as science, geography, and maths, children take part in practical, hands-on activities that help them apply their knowledge in meaningful ways. In science, pupils explore topics such as living things and their habitats, forces, and materials through real investigations and experiments outdoors. Geography lessons make use of fieldwork opportunities to study maps, land use, and local features, developing important enquiry and observation skills. In maths, outdoor learning allows children to measure, estimate, collect data, and solve real-world problems in context. These experiences not only deepen understanding but also promote teamwork, resilience, and a genuine enthusiasm for learning beyond the classroom walls.

Have a go at home - can you spot these minibeasts on a walk or in your garden?

Have a go at home - can you go on a scavenger hunt to find each colour of the rainbow?
