F2 and Y1 Phonics and Reading Parent Meeting
Thu 30 Sep 2021On Wednesday 29th and Thursday 30th September we hosted our first parent meetings of the year for F2 and Y1 parents based on phonics and reading. Thank you to everyone who attended the meetings. We spoke about the different phonics terminology we use, our phonics scheme, provided a range of phonics resources and discussed the reading opportunities provided in school and at home.
All parents will receive the phonics information and we will provide extra information for any parent who requests further support.
Our main focus is read, read, read at every opportunity, help your child to blend and apply phonics sounds they have been exposed to and ensure they have a love of reading.

Year 1 and 2 Autumn Adventurers
Tue 28 Sep 2021Year 1 and 2 had the most amazing day taking part in Autumn Adventures. They showed so much courage, confidence and amazing listening focusing on developing some outdoor and adventure skills.
Fire pit - they roasted marshmallows, made popcorn looking at changes of state and learned about the fire safety triangle.
Archery - We pretended to be Robin Hood and learned how to use a bow and arrow to safely shoot our arrows to our targets.
Climbing wall - using our balance and strength we were able to climb all the way up to the top of the wall to reach the moon!
Year 1 and 2 impressed the instructors so much, as well as all the staff and we were so proud of how much resilience everyone showed with all the activities, especially the climbing wall.

Music Update
Fri 24 Sep 2021Music Update
Children across Y4-Y6 had their first lesson with their own musical instrument (either a trumpet or trombone). These musical instruments will eventually be sent home for children to practice - they will then need to be brought in every single Friday so the children can benefit from their weekly music tuition.
This is such a wonderful opportunity for our children to excel at learning an instrument this year- thanks to Miss Brierley for organising this.
Area Band
There are still spaces in the y5-y6 Area Band. This will take place at Southglade Primary and Nursery School on a Tuesday after school and will finish at 4.55pm
Please contact your child's class teacher if you would want your child to take part in this exciting opportunity.

EAL afternoon
Fri 24 Sep 2021Spanish Afternoon
On Wednesday 22nd of September children across the school enjoyed a fantastic afternoon of fun celebrating all things Spanish. Children in KS2 focused on Gaudi and made amazing mosaics inspired by Gaudi whilst children in ks1 looked at Picasso and a type of art called Cubism. In EYFS children found out all about the Spanish flag and the colours it contains within it.
There was also a Spanish themed menu with children and vegetable paella for the children to enjoy- it was very tasty.
Some year groups also learnt how to flamenco dance- year 2 did an incredible job with this.
Thank-you to Miss Fryer who is our EAL lead across school for organising such a fun afternoon for all of our children.

Year 2 Awe and Wonder Day
Wed 22 Sep 2021On Tuesday 21st September, Year 2 had a fantastic Awe and Wonder day based on their topic of the Great Fire of London! They spent the day doing art work replicating the flames and silhouettes in a range of artwork, thinking about fireworks including colours and shapes, learning about fire safety including stop, drop and roll, pretending to be firemen to see how to pass water down a line to put out the fire, working out how long or how they would be able to do this and finally thinking about how the fire would spread using toilet rolls and marbles. Take a look at the class page to find out more.

Mrs Dowse and Mrs Rowlett will be leading on this project which will have a hugely positive impact on our pupils during this academic year and those following. Congratulations to all the staff who were involved in the application to provide our children with this great opportunity.

Music Mark Award
Tue 21 Sep 2021Exciting News
Southglade Primary and Nursery school have been nominated by Nottingham Music Hub to become a Music Mark School. This is in recognition of our commitment to a broad and balanced curriculum with music at its heart.
Musical Instruments
This week children in Y4-Y6 will start their weekly musical instrument lessons. This will be the first time for 18 months that these have taken place due to covid-19. Even more excitingly, all children will have their own instruments that they will play; these will be taken home on a Friday after school and returned the following Friday. We really hope to find some budding musical superstars who become expert trumpet and trombone players.

Well Being Wednesday - How can I stay safe?
Wed 15 Sep 2021On Wednesday 15th September we completed a whole school wellbeing Wednesday afternoon focusing on answering the question 'How can I stay safe?'
As a school we worked through a range of different skills throughout each year group which developed our knowledge and understanding of how to stay safe. We thought about the best ways to help each other, look after ourselves at school, outside and online. We answered this question through a range of activities including written and art based creative activities. We also used our oracy skills to discuss different scenarios and identify ways or people who keep us safe.
