Public Sector Equality Duty

In order to comply with the Public sector Equality Duty there are a number of statutory duties that must be met by the school in line with legislation from the Disability Equality Duty (2005), Equality Act (2006) and the Equality Act (2010)

 

Southglade  Primary and Nursery School Equality Objectives Statement

Under the Equality Act 2010, it is unlawful to discriminate against a pupil or prospective pupil by treating them less favourably on the basis of a 'protected characteristic'.

The protected characteristics are:

 

  • Sex
  • Age
  • Race
  • Disability
  • Religion or belief
  • Sexual orientation
  • Gender reassignment
  • Pregnancy or maternity
  • Marriage and civil partnership
  •  

At Southglade Primary and Nursery school we make sure all members of our school community feel welcomed and valued. Our vision and values promote inclusivity and equality and tackle discrimination. We have high expectations for all our pupils irrespective of race, culture, gender or disability.

We aim to promote our pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, with special emphasis on promoting equality and diversity, and eradicating prejudicial incidents for pupils and staff. Our school is committed to eliminating discrimination, and also increasing understanding and appreciation for diversity.

Through a balanced and fair curriculum, our pupils are exposed to ideas and concepts that may challenge their understanding, to help ensure that they learn to become more accepting and inclusive of others. 

We are committed to creating a prejudice-free environment for staff and pupils by:

  • Being respectful
  • Treating all members of the school community fairly
  • Developing an understanding of diversity
  • Adopting an inclusive attitude
  • Adopting an inclusive curriculum that is accessible to all
  • Encouraging compassion and open-mindedness

 

We do not tolerate any form of prejudice-related incident whether direct or indirect. When an incident is reported, we ensure appropriate action is taken and a resolution is put into place which is both fair and firm.

Our pupils are taught to be:

  • Understanding and respectful of others
  • Celebratory of cultural diversity
  • Inclusive
  • Aware of what discriminatory behaviour is

Our school staff will also:

  • Promote diversity and equality
  • Encourage and adopt an inclusive attitude
  • Lead by example

 

Equality of opportunity and non-discrimination extends to the treatment of all members of our school community. All staff members are obliged to act in accordance will the school’s various policies relating to equality.
