Reading

Read chapter 1 of 'How to Train Your Dragon.' There is a word document attached as well as a video of Cressida Cowell (author) reading the chapter. You could listen to the chapter first and then try to read it yourself, practising reading with fluency and expression. Once you have read the chapter, can you answer the following comprehension questions?

 

1. What was the soldier in charge called?

2. How many parts are there to the D.I.T test?

5. What does 'exile' mean?

Vocabulary

Complete the vocabulary grids for the words 'solemn' and 'sinister.' Both words can be found on p.2 of the handout of chapter 1.

 

Grammar

Complete one of the activities below for conjunctions.

Conjunction = A type of connective that joins clauses. Co-ordinating conjunctions include ‘and’, ‘but’ and ‘so’. Subordinating conjunctions include ‘because’, ‘if’ and ‘until’.

 

1. Underline the conjunctions in the sentences below.

 

 

2. Help to finish the fairy tale sentences by adding a subordinate clause to the end of each one. Use the conjunctions in the box below to extend the sentences.
e.g. Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall, whilst the King's horses approached.
