Fri 29 Mar 2019 Mr Pegram
Our learning value this half-term is kindness. This includes kindness towards our local environment. Therefore, year 6 went on a litter pick to Sandybanks Nature Reserve to help with tidying the local environment. The children enthusiastically spent about 30 minutes picking up a wide range of litter. Well done!

At Southglade Primary School we place great value on taking our children on enriching visits out into the local community and further afield.

During this academic year we have taken our children on:

    • 20 educational visits of which 3 were residentials involving overnight supervision
    • 20 sports tournaments- we are one of the top 5 schools when it comes to participating in sports tournaments and this contributed to being awarded the gold standard for sports last year.

This number will further grow as the Summer Term progresses.

Thu 28 Mar 2019 Mr Pegram/ Mrs Smith/ Mr Shuttleworth

On Thursday 28th March, Year 6 were fortunate to be able to visit the Nottingham Playhouse to watch the play 'Skellig' by David Almond. This is the book that we have been studying during the Spring Term so it was an unmissable opportunity to watch a live theatre show of a book that we have all enjoyed greatly- a book that has many magical moments.

6S and 6PS behaved impeccably and were completely engaged throughout with the show- it was a pleasure to enjoy such an experience with them.

Visit our year 6 blog for more information and pictures of the experience.

  • Italy afternoon- Friday 22nd March

Sun 24 Mar 2019 Mr Pegram

On Friday 22nd of March we enjoyed our first international afternoon with a theme of Italy. At lunchtime, our wonderful catering team- led by Tia- created a fabulous Italian themed meal including lasagne and meatballs- they were also dressed in the Italian colours of red, white and  green.

Following lunchtime- in the afternoon session- children participated in a range of themed activities linked to the country of Italy.

    These activities included:

    • making simple Margherita pizzas
    • art under tables linked to the Sistine Chapel
    • learning key words and Italian phrases
    • research about the country of Italy and creating information posters
    • making necklaces from dried pasta
    • Italian colouring sheets

The children really enjoyed themselves. I would like to say a huge thank-you to Mrs Della Rocca who organised the afternoon and even dressed for the occasion in her Italian football kit!

Coming next: Poland afternoon on May 24th and an international day modern foreign languages day on the 20th June.

  • Fundraising Update- Nottingham Children's Hospital

Sun 24 Mar 2019 Mr Pegram
A HUGE well done to all the staff and parents who helped to raise an amazing £540.03 for Nottingham Children's Hospital. This was raised through a charity 5k run, which was enjoyed/ endured by some fabulous staff members at Southglade Primary School and generous donations from our school community following our Christmas plays back in December. Once more a HUGE well done- this effort represents the values we try and instil in our children at Southglade Primary School.

On Thursday 21st of March 4P took part in a littler pick at the Sandybank nature reserve in Bestwood Park. They met local councillor Dale Griffin and did a great job making a precious nature reserve clean and tidy once again.

Below are some pictures of them in action wearing their high visibility jackets.

We are all very proud of you and the great behaviour that you showcased.

More classes and year groups will be going on litter picks over the next couple of weeks.

  • Former Pupil and Author Dylan Wardle Visits School

Wed 20 Mar 2019 Mr Pegram

Dylan Wardle, a former Southglade pupil, visited our school today to talk about life as an author. He has written and published his own book entitled: words of solitude.

Dylan has wanted to be a writer since the age of 5 and through hard-work and dedication he has achieved his aim.

Dylan came into our ks2 assembly today to talk about how he achieved his goals and to also inspire our children that they too can achieve their ambitions through dedication and perseverance.

He also brought in his literacy award that he received in the 2008-9 academic year when his teacher was Mrs Hyland- it was Mrs Hyland's assembly today and it was Mrs Hyland who had nominated Dylan for this award a decade ago.

Thank-you Dylan: we are all so proud of you and everything you have achieved.
