Homework in Y5 is optional. However, there are rewards for completion of homework. Any proof of spelling practice, completing your 4 reads, completing something from the homework menu, doing 5 or more minutes of TTRS at home, or taking home any of the optional homework sheets from class will be rewarded. Children will receive a raffle ticket in the jar for every returned piece of homework, and at the end of every week, a name will be pulled out of the jar to have a dip in the prize box.

    PE

5F PE is on a Tuesday. 5S PE is on a Friday. Please ensure your child brings their PE kit with them to school to change into. This should be a white top, black bottoms (leggings, joggers, shorts) and suitable shoes (trainers/plimsolls).

    First Day Back!

On our first day back, we reminded ourselves of our school rules and how we can represent our RESPECT code of conduct in school. We explored the world of Vikings including Viking runes. We wrote our names in Viking runes and wrote messages to the other Year 5 class for them to decode. In the afternoon, we created our inner and outer selves, displaying our interests, hobbies and personality traits on the inside.

We explored Viking shields, what colours are used and why, what symbols might be used and why, and then used this information to create our own Viking shields. We also looked at Viking artefacts and practised sketching them, paying close attention to the details and shapes on them.

    RSC with Mrs Dowse

    Lesson 1

Today we introduced Macbeth. We spoke about working as a team and what skills we will need to build up. We looked at different games that used non-verbal communication and how actions help us recall a story or event. We explored the witches/spirits and what atmosphere we might need, e.g., eerie, thunder, lightning and rain. We created a soundscape orchestra taking on different sounds of the thunderstorm. Following this, we introduced the text spoken by the witches and put this together with actions.

    Lesson 2

Today we started with a reflection on what we learnt last week. We spoke about how the witches built up an eerie atmosphere. Next, we began with games that would tell us about the start of the play. How Scotland was at war with Norway and that King Duncan was the current king of Scotland. We looked at how someone had a secret that they wanted to get rid of. We began to think about what was happening in the battle. We shared a piece of text and started to look at it in more detail about the battle, unpicking words in the text. We then recreated the battle. We looked at what King Duncan said after the battle and what perspective we had on Macbeth.

    Lesson 3

Today we looked at warm up games and thinking on the spot, we played one-word stories and yes and…. We then looked at how we would set ourselves out for a performance and where we may stand looking at stage directions and voice projection. We looked at different characters and added lines. We then worked in groups and focused on a different section of Macbeth and Banquo meeting the witches. They thought about their beginning, ending and audience. Followed by creating predictions.

Today we started with a reflection of last week and acted it out as a group story. We then began to look at the role of Lady Macbeth. I introduced them to the background, and we then studied a conversation between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. We tried it in different ways and looked at who had the power in the relationship. We then looked at the dagger speech and broke down its meaning by focussing on words and actions. We ended with storytelling and children acting out the murder. We used a lot of inference skills today and thought about audience and projection.

    Viking Villages

The children learnt about what a typical Viking village may have looked like, examining some of the common features they had using primary and secondary resources, and considering the location of these settlements and why they needed to be near water.

5F's visit to the outdoor classroom

We took our history lesson over to the outdoor classroom. Children worked in small groups to match up the Norse gods and goddesses with their descriptions. The children were in awe of our new space and thoroughly enjoyed spending time there.

    Wellbeing day – Personal Safety

The theme of our wellbeing day was personal safety. We explored the topics of rail and tram safety, emergency response and basic first aid. For rail and tram safety, we discussed various scenarios of dangers around tram and rail tracks and what we would do differently to keep safe. We then designed posters to raise awareness of dangers around tram and rail tracks as well as promoting staying safe. For our emergency response section, we were educated on how to call 999, what to do in an emergency, how to explain to an operator where we are and what service to ask for. We then role-played in pairs as operator and person in need. The operator had to ask questions to find out what service the person in need required and what their location was. Finally, for first aid, we explored basic first aid, including DRABC, signs of concussion, and how to help somebody who may be choking.

    Parent afternoon

Thank you so much to all the parents who were able to attend school to see Year 5 showcase what they've been practising in their Shakespeare lessons. It was wonderful to have you participate in some of our warm-up games as well as sharing a section from Macbeth that we had been rehearsing.
