Earlier this year, we raised money for an ex-pupil (Matthew Jesson) to help his appeal for building a school in Morrocco. Here is Matthew's report. (with some photos here).....
doesn’t seem too long ago that I was asking for you, your child’s and
Southglade’s support in helping me to fundraise for my volunteer project in
Morocco. This was specifically to help construct a language centre, for
teaching Arabic and French to 3 – 6 year olds, in order for the children to
communicate more effectively as the majority can only speak fluently in local
group’s main task throughout our stay was to tile the floor of the entire
building. In England this task would have been completed in a couple of days
but due to the lack of machinery, supplies and heat it took just over 10 days. We
were back to basics in making the cement from scratch and forming human bucket
chains to move the tiles and cement up to the language centre.
local children were keen to observe and help with the project and are eagerly
awaiting the full completion later in the year. As we stayed in the heart of
the village the group were able to engage with the children who were excited at
the prospect of showing us their local community and way of life and in return
we were able to entertain them with football and parachute games after a day’s
work had been completed.
two weeks I spent out in Marigha, Morocco have without a doubt been the best of
my life and for that I thank those who supported me in reaching my fundraising
total. It was a highly rewarding experience and one that if given the
opportunity to repeat I would have no hesitation in doing so."
