What is Maths?
Maths is where we become better at numeracy. It is where we learn about numbers. We will use maths all of our lives so being able to add, multiply and calculate in all sorts of ways is a basic skill we need to learn.
All children receive a daily maths lesson at Southglade Primary School. Most lessons take place with their class teachers but in year 3 and year 4 we have target groups allowing for children to be with children of a similar ability.
Interventions
Some children will be receiving extra support in Numeracy this year. This support will happen either at assembly time or during the afternoon with our highly trained and skilled teaching assistant team. The programme we will be following is the Springboard scheme. The aim of this intervention is to boost children, who with a little bit of extra support, will make accelerated progress as they move through Key Stage 2.
Early Maths Project
Miss O Grady has been piloting a new project called the Early Maths project. Data from the schools piloting the project suggested it has had such a great impact on children's calculation and oral skills that the project will be extended to the nursery, to Miss Wilson's class and also to year 1. This will contribute to higher standards in mathematics across the whole school.
Mathletics
Children still have access to the mathletics programme. In the next few weeks. lists will be updated so that children can have access to the curriculum content appropriate to their year group. Children should be encouraged to go on Mathletics as often as possible as it is a great way to improve mental mathematics skills and recall of times tables. It is also tremendous fun to race against children from across the world.
Outside Learning
A group of schools from the local area have decided to look at ways to make mathematics more fun. The aim for later this year, is to attempt to take mathematics out of the classroom at least once a half term. Ideas at the moment include maths orienteering which sounds like great fun to me!
SAT's
Congratulations to last years year 6. They did fantastically well and scored the highest percentage we have ever scored for level 4's. Well done. The current year 6 will receive booster lessons after Christmas to support them in acheiving similar standards.
