Southglade Primary School

Dear Parent/Carer

Welcome back to another term  - Year 5

I would like to take this opportunity of thanking you all again for the support given so far – and wish you a belated Happy New Year.  I will quickly inform you on what we are covering this part of the year. 

Topics

Below is an outline of the topics that your child will be studying throughout the Spring Term.  The topic this term is based on World Climate.

Literacy                      We follow the National Literacy Strategy, and the units we will be covering will be Older Literature (Tom’s Midnight Garden), Persuasive Writing, Poetry and Dramatic Conventions.

Drama                         We will act out interviewing skills whilst creating our newspaper reports.  Also this will include persuading people in dialogue.

                                   

Numeracy                   We follow the Numeracy Framework.  Their class targets will include

                                    Knowing all their times tables up to 10 and being able to solve problems using the four operations. 

Science                         1) Solid Liquid and Gas   (from Changing State).  2)  Keeping Healthy (is water important?)

Geography                  World Climate

D&T                            Designing and Making a healthy biscuit.

Music                          Cyclic Patterns

Art                              We will be looking at the work of William Morris and the effect he had on furniture, wallpaper and art in the Victorian times.

PE                          We are lucky to have outside providers coming in to do FOOTBALL, but this will be on FRIDAY mornings, so please have outside games kit for then. We will be out in most weathers so please ensure your child has warm clothing.

                                We will be swimming on Monday afternoons in the SECOND half of the spring term. Gymnastics will be on Tuesday

RE                                Christians and the Bible/ Story of Lent/Easter

HOMEWORK  will be given every Friday to be returned by the following Friday. Weekly spellings and tables on an individual basis will be given and tested. Your child should be heard read at least 4 times a week , this is so important for their progress.
